ChatGPT Ads, With the Caveat Nobody Else Mentions
Ads inside ChatGPT are real, buyable and genuinely interesting. They also only serve to users on free and lower-cost tiers — which means a large share of senior B2B buyers will never see them. We will tell you whether yours will.
What is ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are paid, clearly labelled sponsored placements that appear below a ChatGPT response, delivered by OpenAI's advertising system and separated from the assistant's actual answer. Advertisers do not influence what ChatGPT says; ads run on a separate system and are marked as sponsored.
Access has broadened through 2026. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026 in the United States and has expanded the pilot to further markets. Buying is available through a beta self-serve Ads Manager with CPC bidding, and through agency partners including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP, plus technology partners such as Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt.
The privacy model is worth understanding because clients ask about it immediately. Advertisers do not receive chat content, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location or IP data. Targeting works from conversational context and, where a user has enabled ads personalisation, broader signals — but the raw conversation never reaches the advertiser.
Here is the part most agencies selling this will not put in writing: ads serve only to logged-in users on the Free and Go tiers. Users on Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Business plans see no ads at all, as do users known or predicted to be under 18. In B2B, a substantial share of senior buyers sit on paid plans. That does not make the channel useless — it makes reachability the first question, not an afterthought.
ChatGPT Ads vs LinkedIn Ads vs Google Ads for B2B
Where this channel genuinely fits, and where it does not.
| Dimension | LinkedIn Ads | Google Ads | ChatGPT Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audience precision | Job title, company, seniority — highest in B2B | Keyword intent, no firmographics natively | Conversational context, no firmographic targeting |
| Reaches senior buyers | Yes, directly targetable | Yes, if they search | Only if they use a free or Go tier |
| Intent signal | Low — interruption model | High — active search | High — active problem-solving in conversation |
| Measurement maturity | Mature | Mature | Developing |
| Format variety | Multiple formats | Multiple formats | One format today |
| Cost predictability | Well understood, expensive | Well understood | Early — benchmarks still forming |
| Best used for | Reaching named decision-makers | Capturing bottom-funnel search intent | Early-stage research and practitioner reach |
Our honest position: for most B2B companies today, ChatGPT Ads is a test-budget channel rather than a core one — and it works best paired with GEO, so you appear in the organic recommendation as well as the sponsored slot.
What's Included

What Does It Cost to Advertise on ChatGPT?
Media spend goes to OpenAI; our fee covers assessment, setup, creative and management.
| Cost component | What it covers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Media spend | Paid directly to OpenAI on a CPC basis | Benchmarks are still forming — treat early spend as learning budget |
| Reachability assessment | ICP tier analysis, market and policy screen | Delivered before any commitment. If the answer is no, you pay nothing further |
| Setup and creative | Account, campaign structure, ad copy, tracking | One-off project fee |
| Ongoing management | Optimisation, reporting, monthly channel review | Monthly fee, scaled to spend |
| Recommended test budget | A controlled pilot rather than a full channel commitment | Enough to learn, small enough that a null result does not hurt |
| GEO pairing | Organic assistant visibility alongside paid | Usually the higher-return half of the pair |
We do not recommend moving significant budget into this channel from LinkedIn or Google on current evidence. Test it, measure it honestly, and scale only if your specific ICP proves reachable.
Is This Right for You?
This works well in some situations and badly in others. Here is an honest filter before you commit budget.
This will likely work if…
- Your buyers include practitioners, analysts or junior evaluators, not only the C-suite
- You sell into markets currently live in the pilot
- Your category is not policy-restricted
- You have test budget you can afford to learn from
- You are already investing in GEO for organic assistant visibility
- You want early-mover learning in a channel competitors are ignoring
This is the wrong move if…
- Your buyers are exclusively senior executives likely on paid ad-free tiers
- You need precise firmographic targeting — use LinkedIn
- Your target markets are not in the pilot yet
- Your category is restricted under current ad policies
- You need mature attribution before spending anything
- You would be moving budget out of a channel that currently works
ChatGPT Ads FAQs
They are sponsored placements that appear below a ChatGPT response, clearly labelled and visually separated from the answer. Delivery is decided by OpenAI's ads system based on expected relevance and outcomes, using the context of the current conversation and, where the user has enabled personalisation, broader signals. Ads do not influence what ChatGPT says — they run on a separate system from the chat model.
Only logged-in users on the Free and Go tiers. Users on Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Business plans see no ads, and neither do users known or predicted to be under 18. Free-tier users can also switch to an ads-free experience with reduced limits. For B2B this is the single most important fact about the channel.
It depends entirely on where your buyers sit. If your ICP includes practitioners, analysts and junior evaluators who commonly use free tiers, there is a reachable audience. If you sell exclusively to senior executives who are likely on Plus or an enterprise plan, a large share of your ICP is structurally unreachable through this channel. We assess that before you commit budget, because the answer varies enormously by category.
Very little, by design. Advertisers do not receive chat content, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location or IP data. Targeting is handled by OpenAI's system rather than exposed to the advertiser, which means less granular audience control than LinkedIn or Google but also fewer privacy concerns to manage.
The pilot began in the United States in February 2026 and has expanded through the year to additional markets. Because the list changes, we verify current market eligibility as part of the reachability assessment rather than quoting a list that may be out of date by the time you read it.
Two routes. A beta self-serve Ads Manager allows advertisers to sign up, create campaigns and bid on a CPC basis directly. Alternatively, agency partners including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP, and technology partners such as Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt, provide access through tools advertisers already use. We will recommend whichever suits your spend level and existing stack.
Not on current evidence. Measurement is still developing, there is one ad format, and cost benchmarks are immature. Our recommendation for almost every B2B client is a controlled test budget alongside existing channels, treated as learning spend, with a clear decision point after six to eight weeks.
GEO, for most B2B companies, if you can only do one. GEO influences the recommendation itself, reaches users on every tier including paid ones, and compounds over time. ChatGPT Ads reach only free and Go tier users and stop the moment you stop paying. Run together they are complementary — organic recommendation plus sponsored presence — which is the strongest position.
